Creative Accounting: our field of Interest

We’re really pleased to share that we got some strategic ACE funding to do another one of our research projects - this time on the very light topic of how finances in the arts are feeling quite traumatic right now, especially for freelancers!

Accurate but jovial sentiments aside, we’re researching financial trauma. This might come to us from our lived experiences, familial histories and/or sector preconceptions, and will be contributing to this very real moment of both perceived and real scarcity around the flow of cash in the arts. We’re hoping to understand, once we’re more aware of the obstacle-laden playing field, how on earth we can pull our heads out of the pit to make changes and remain hopeful and ambitious.

A little run down of what we’re doing for everyone who’s nosey about what’s getting funded right now:

• getting certified as Trauma of Money professionals - training in an approach to hold conversations around money through the lens of compassion and disempowering financial shame.
• researching ways to make financial resources and conversations more accessible for neurodiverse and disabled folks
• public survey and focus groups to understand how you’re all feeling about finances in the arts, and what money stories you might be telling yourself and others.

We’re gonna share a few things along the way, but this is just the research phase so nothing mega coming out until we hopefully get some more cash!

So for now, we’re off for a £4.50 Whippy and to deep our super summery reading lists on scarcity, fawning, failure, rejection and thankfully a little bit of abundance and hope.
